The Vagina Monologues scream ‘No’ to domestic abuse

They say that love is blind, and in some cases it can even be numb. To the one in three women who are subject to domestic violence, V-Day Greensboro says, “Stand up for yourself. Be empowered.”
A non-profit organization, V-Day Greensboro is part of a global movement to end violence against women and girls. By performing Eve Ensler’s The Vagina Monologues, the group hopes to not only raise awareness for domestic abuse, but to donate to the cause of the local Sherri Denese Jackson Foundation, a group that works to stop and prevent domestic violence by offering intervention, boosting women’s self-esteem and raising awareness to the community.
“This is activist theater,” said Devon Currie, organizer. Currie herself is a survivor of an abusive relationship and took the movement to heart after hearing about it from a college professor. “It’s really important to me to make women feel empowered and to create a space where women feel safe to talk about their experiences,” Currie said. “The more that we empower women and the more we talk about women, the more likely it is that these types of situations aren’t going to happen again.”
Currie has helped organize a V-Day Greensboro event for the last three years. “Luckily, I had a lot of experience in theater, so it wasn’t that hard to get the word out to some of my actor friends,” Currie said.
“V-day Greensboro came to us a couple of years ago, and I can only say that in the last three years it has made such a huge difference, not only financially, but also in helping to get the word out about women’s abuse and mutilation both locally and globally,” said Portia Shipman, founder of SDJF. “It sends a great message and has given us more exposure to our cause and has opened many more doors for us.”
Currie notes that the monologues are a powerful, intriguing and humorous expression of what it means to be a woman, and though they are targeted more to females, men will also find them entertaining. “There’s a lot of really funny pieces,” Currie says. “There are some that speak in a really endearing way about the relationship between a man and a woman.”
Currie says auditions to be a volunteer actress are always open to the public.
“It’s interesting because we have a number of women each year who have never done any performing,” Currie said. “It makes it really poignant and really special because these monologues are stories of some specific women, but mostly about being a woman in general. So it’s really nice to get people who aren’t actors to come out and tell these stories.”
This year, about a dozen women, including the founder of SDJF, will perform the monologues.
Shipman said she is both excited and nervous to have a larger role in this year’s event, as she will be performing as one of the women in The Vagina Monologues. “It gives me the opportunity to be more a part of the event and have a more significant role,” Shipman said.
The global campaign, V-Day, began in 1994 after Eve Ensler wrote her award-winning The Vagina Monologues, which addressed women’s sexuality and the social stigma surrounding rape and abuse.
The play was more than just a message or an artful expression, it was a conversation catalyst and it inspired many women in the audience to share with Ensler their own stories of survival. It was on Valentine’s Day in 1998 when Ensler and a group of NYC women established V-Day, a 501(c)3 organization with the mission of putting an end to domestic violence.
To do so, once a year, in February, March and April, Ensler allows groups around the world, such as V-Day Greensboro, to produce a performance of the play with the stipulation that the proceeds go to fund local projects and programs with a similar mission. Ten percent of proceeds will go back to fund V-Day’s global interests, such as building shelters for women in Egypt and Iraq, and sponsoring workshops in Afghanistan.
“It’s almost overwhelming, but it’s incredible at the same time,” Currie said. “It’s so special to be a part of something that is helping women both locally and around the world.”

V-Day Greensboro will present The Vagina Monologues at Glenwood Coffee and Books, 1310 Glenwood Ave., Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets are $10, $8 for students and seniors. An Afternoon At The Theatre, "Tick, Tick Boom"

Sam loves Jonathan Larson as much as I do, so when I heard Triad Stage was producing Tick, Tick Boom I knew I wanted to see it with him.

Sam and I both worked with Meghan Hoffman, who played Susan, a few years ago during The Miss Firecracker Contest. Meghan has a great voice and her performance was very impressive.

Joshua Morgan played Jon. I loved everything he did. He embodied the character so fully! Terrence Johnson played Michael and he was very good too.

The entire production was awesome but the time spent with Sam was priceless.

Don't Judge

In one month I will be going to see Bring It On: The Musical in Charlotte. I am terribly excited for several reasons.

Yes, I've seen the movies. All three of them. And I have the first two on DVD. Don't judge me. These movies are my guilty pleasure. I love them.

Talk about a producer's dream team. I mean, come on. Jeff Whitty, who wrote Avenue Q and Lin-Manuel Miranda, who wrote In The Heights are bringing this musical to life. Yes, please!

Truth be told I just really love cheerleading. The closest I've ever gotten to being a cheerleader was when I played Tammy in Theatre Alliance's Debbie Does Dallas: The Musical. I love the athleticism and the dance choreography. I gladly gave up many afternoon hours watching the high school and college cheerleading championships on TV.

I can't wait to see this show!

Beautiful tulips grace my dresser. I love that prettiness greets me in the morning.

Last night as I was preparing the Avenue Q playbills for the next show, Ken stood at the door watching me. He asked if there was anything wrong. I looked up, shook my head and replied, "No." He asked again and I asked him why he was asking, "Do I look like something is wrong?" I don't remember his response, but I replied that I was just tired, busy week at work.

On the drive home I couldn't shake his query. Is something wrong? The more I thought about it the more I realized there is something wrong. I just can't put my finger on it.

It started on February 23. Our last group of newhires were graduating. We conduct a graduation ceremony, which I stage manage. My co-trainers and I have our specific responsibilities - Nicky deals with the refreshments, Larry runs the videos and slide presentations and I'm the emcee. The 3 of us work like a well oiled machine we've done so many ceremonies this year. Unfortunately, Larry was sick with bronchitis the day of the graduation and wasn't going to come in. I don't know why, but his absence really threw me. I solved the immediate problem by training someone else, but I was utterly stressed and panicked. In the back of my mind I kept wondering why I was reacting the way I was. I've stage managed many theatre productions! Late entrances, missing props, set issues, costume malfunctions-nothing had thrown me like this before.

Lately during quiet moments, whether I'm at work or home, my face takes on a puzzled expression as my mind wanders. Cade said I looked worried.

Ken noticed something. Cade noticed something. And I can't shake the feel that something is, not necessarily wrong, but I just don't feel right.

Box Office Assistant

I love to bring Cade with me when I am working box office. He is quite the little worker. As patrons were checking in, I would ask Cade to get their numbered program. Cade handed them the programs, then gave them the "house will open at 7:30pm. enjoy the show." spiel.

A Book, A Boy and His Dog

This was definitely one of those Kodak moments. Two things that absolutely warm my heart; Cade is reading and Commander is keeping him company.

First Rehearsal

Tonight was our first night of rehearsals for "The Vagina Monologues." It was mainly a read through. We skipped the opening number, since I haven't assigned parts as of yet. We also skipped the Say, Wear piece. There are two other pieces Sisters and Over It that I can't quite figure out what to do with. As I knew Peg wouldn't make it tonight and with Kofi dropping out, I just told the cast I'd assign those parts when our cast was firmed and together.

The good news is that we do have a woman of color for the Coochi Snorcher piece. Devon and I mentioned to Portia that we needed some African American representation. She made a phone call and Monica showed up. I'm so glad to have her. With the help of the SDJ Foundation, she's a survivor of domestic abuse. She spoke about her experience, which really helped us focus on why we are doing the show.

Portia asked us to don Foundation shirts and pose for a publicity shot for their website. These are my V ladies!

"It's For You, Mom."

When Cade got home from school today, he very gently pulled something out of his backpack. It was wrapped in a paper towel and he was very worried it was broken. As he carefully pulled back the towel, he started smiling.

Here it is hanging in my office.

Vagina Auditions, Round 2

I'm trying my best not to be discouraged. But I am. A little bit.

Three girls from UNCG showed up for auditions tonight. And while I am so very grateful they showed up, I have 8 ladies for a full scale production. Eight. Ocho. 8.

Yes, I know the script really only calls for 3. But I was really hoping my directorial debut would turn out better than 8 ladies presenting "The Vagina Monologues."

Devon and I are going to make another last ditch effort to beat the bushes.

This time I'm crossing my fingers and my toes!

Vagina Auditions

Based on the response from the Facebook invite, I knew turnout would be minimal. Only 12 responded they would attend. If everyone showed up, I'd be okay.

Linda was the first to walk in. Followed by Lee Ann. I was very excited because I know both of them and know what they each can do. Devon's friend Devon E. and her friend Sonja were the next to show up. I went ahead and auditioned Linda and Lee Ann. I even asked Linda to read "The Vagina Workshop." This piece requires an English accent and I wanted to see if Linda could pull it off. She was fantastic!

Peg was the next to arrive. I was so glad to see her. I was looking forward to her doing the moaning piece again. When she handed in her audition form, she threw me for a loop. Instead of the moaning piece, she wanted to do "My Angry Vagina." I knew she could rock either one. Devon E. and Peg both did the angry piece.

After releasing Devon E., Sonja and Peg Devon and I brainstormed to see who else we could call to audition. We suggested a few names, waited another 30 minutes and decided to call it a day.

I'm excited that I have 5 good women to cast. I'll need more, but at least I have these talented ladies. We're holding another round of auditions on Monday.

I'm crossing my fingers!

Mi Coche

Here's Bridget, standing with the new convertible Mustang I will be winning in US Airways' Fit For US program.

I got a call from the Guilford Animal Shelter yesterday. A volunteer who was particularily fond of Ned was asking for an update. I emailed her and she replied, almost immediately.

Susan

My son, Cade, and I adopted Ned on Sunday. Cade wanted a Husky and was immediately drawn to Ned.

I cannot tell you how happy we are with him. He is so very gentle and loving. Cade is 9 and can walk Ned by himself because he minds the leash so well. And the two of them love playing ball! After Cade goes to bed, Ned lays in my lap, keeping me warm while I read on the couch.

Ned wasn’t eating, so I brought him to the vet yesterday. He has some gum inflammation and a bit of a bug (something to do with bird poo). We’re giving him meds and in a couple of weeks will get him a good teeth cleaning. The vet was just as taken with Ned and also agreed that Ned is a very special dog.

I’ve really no idea why he was in the shelter for so long, but we’re very lucky that he was. Our family really is thrilled to have him.

Hi Cheryl Ann,

Thanks so very much for sending me this wonderful news about Ned. I have been volunteering at the Shelter for 2 ½ years, and I have to say that Ned is one of my all time favorites. I am there Monday – Friday from noon – 3:00 and Ned was always my first dog out…he REALLY “holds it” and did not want a messy kennel. Over the months, I came to discover what a playful yet loving dog he is. He will be busy fetching the tennis ball one minute and the next minute he will sit nice as can be and soak in the love as I was caressing his cheeks. I prayed for a loving home for him, with a family that would truly appreciate him just as he is. Your note below tells me that my prayers have been answered and I can stop worrying about him. As to why he was there so long, it is really hard to say. I like to think that he was just waiting for his true family to find him. If you get a chance to send a picture of Ned in his new home and with his new family that would be fabulous. This is the stuff that keeps us volunteers going. May God bless you all and please give Ned a big hug from me.

p.s. The bird  poo was probably on a ball in one of the pens, though Ned is picky and didn’t like to pick up the dirty balls…what a great dog!

I Am Loved

And I got the roses, balloon, Skittles and a Nicholas Sparks novel to prove it!

A New Addition

The plan was to drop Mallorie off at the airport, run an errand and be home by dinner. Her Continental flight was delayed a couple of hours, so Cade and I thought we'd park in the rental car drop off lot to wait for her flight to depart. Unfortuntely there were no empty spots, so I decided to go ahead a run my errand. We were in and out of the store within 5 minutes and still Mallorie's flight was delayed. I didn't want to leave Greensboro, in case her flight was cancelled. As we drove by Bridford Parkway, I had an idea.

"Cade, would you like to go to the animal shelter and visit the dogs?"

As soon as the words were out of my mouth, and as he yelled an emphatic "YES!" I realized what a tricky undertaking this would be. Cade has been wanting a dog for a couple of months. I politely and firmly told him we were only visiting, simply killing time until Mallorie's flight departed.

We laughed at some of the cats - those that sat on top of each other and the kittens that played around their sleeping bedmate. We then moved to the dogs. We stopped at each cage, read the name of the dog(s) and the breed. We got through the first house and Cade was doing very well. We did the same in the second house and just as we started down the last row, Cade became enamored. The dog's name was Ned. He was 2, a mix of Siberian Husky/Terrier/Pitbull, and had been at the shelter since July. Cade asked if we could walk Ned. I was initially hesitant; a mixture of pitbull is still a pitbull, but Ned was sitting just as calm as you please. I also noticed he was a sponsored dog, and sponsored dogs don't have much time. He hadn't been walked yet, so I agreed. A volunteer helped us leash Ned and outside the 3 of us went.

I noticed immediately that as we walked down the aisle, even though dogs were jumping and barking, Ned never stopped, never barked. He let Cade lead him out.

As we stepped into an empty lot, two other volunteers noticed us. "Are you considering adopting him?" they queried. Before I could shake my head no, they went on to tell us what a great dog Ned was. "Very gentle, very loving." "He'll lay his head in your lap and soak up affection." I watched as Cade threw a ball. Ned retrieved it and let Cade chase him a bit. He never jumped up on Cade and did come up so Cade could pat him. And even though other dogs were rough-housing near by, Ned didn't care. After 20 minutes of outside play, Ned allowed Cade to leash him and we returned to his cage.

To Cade's credit, he never said a word. He didn't have to. He looked up at me and I saw it in his big brown eyes. A boy had definitely found his dog. Fortunately, I was as impressed with Ned.

Thirty minutes and $70 later Cade, Ned and I headed home. On the drive Cade admitted he didn't exactly love the name Ned, so Cade and I started discussing alternate names. Snowy, Whitey, Salem, Cherokee. Cade suggested Commander. I liked it. And Ned became Commander.

Oh, and Mallorie's flight did eventually depart.

An Afternoon At The Movies, "The Woman In Black"

I was fortunate to see a preview performance of The Little Theatre of Winston-Salem's production of The Woman in Black. It was particulary scary but it did have all the elements of a fine ghost story.

So when the movie trailer came out, I was very interested. And since Sam is a Harry Potter fan, he decided to go with me.

Thank goodness we saw a matinee. I would have been upset to have pluncked down full price for this movie. I don't think either one of us liked it.

A Son Day

Cade was out of school and my office was closed for MLK, Jr. Day. We decided to have a mother-son day out.

We had breakfast at iHop.
Then we hung out in Barnes and Noble. Cade built a tower of legos.

Because he was so good I told him he could pick out a book. After perusing, he finally settled on My Life as a Stuntboy.
To round out the day, we decided to see a movie. Unfortunately the movie line was too long for us to make The Adventures of Tintin. Instead we saw Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked. It was cute.

Guess who's going to be directing "The Vagina Monologues" for V-Day Greensboro?

ME!

Thursday, December 15, 2011

Awww...

I had a very late night tonight. I'm trying so hard to keep up with all the newhire monitoring that needs to be done.

I turned into the driveway and immediately saw a chalk arrow which directed me to the garage. As I waited for the garage door to open, I happened to notice Cade's note to me.

Cut and Color

I met Jennipher Ross in March 2004 when I was looking for someone to help me update my hairstyle. Update she certainly did! I departed her salon with straight, blond hair and I absolutely loved it!

I've gone blond, black, brown, and various shades of red and blond highlights. I've followed Jennipher from Greensboro, to Kernersville and I'm thrilled that she's here in Winston at Hair Plus at the mall.

I showed Jennipher a picture I had found on Pinterest. She loved the dark brown/red color as well. Then she surprised me by asking if I also wanted the cut. In truth, I hadn't considered the short cut. I haven't had short hair since I was in high school. Plus, I wasn't sure my face could carry a shorter cut. Jennipher said it would look great on me. I implicitly trust Jennipher. It's been 8 years and she's never steered me wrong. I jumped in with both feet!

As you can see, it is different from my usual style. I am absolutely thrilled with my new look!

Best Gift Evah!

It's very nice to know that I did make a difference in CSD. If it weren't for the fact that I really do need some daylight hours, I would have remained with CSD.

Sara and April gave me the best going away gift I could ever get.

They bought 4 bags of Skittles, wore kitchen gloves and separated each of the colors for me.

How freakin' awesome is that?!

4th Grade Report Card

Cade received his first real report card. Here's how he did:

In Music, Art, PE, Behavior and Work Habits he earned an "S." There's no key on the actual report card, so I'm assuming an "S" means satisfactory and not sucks.

In his core classes, Reading, Language Arts, Math and Science he earned a "B." I'm especially proud of Cade's Math grade. We all worked hard for that B!

He did make a "C" in Social Studies, which surprised me.

Cade was very proud of his accomplishments, and we were too. We took him to dinner to celebrate.

CSD

I dreaded August 22 just as much as Cade dreaded the end of summer vacation. Two weeks prior the new supervisors completed the mini shift bid. I was going to be the new supe for the Customer Service Desk PM reps.

When other supes found out, they actually offered their condolences! A previous CSD supe told me about the medication he had to start taking just to cope. The supe I would be replacing was now walking around with a spring in his step; the weight of the world so obviously off his shoulders.

I decided to go into my new position with very low expectations. If previous supes couldn't get the team to perform at goal, what could I magically do?

When calls were escalated to me, I asked them their expert opinion, and I supported that opinion. Sometimes I didn't need to talk to the customer. Most times I did. When the reps called me, I made sure to be available to them. I didn't hide.

I also thanked them for the work they did. Nothing fancy, an occassional email, with a simple Thank You. The reps began to talk - when was the last time someone actually thanked them? I built a rapport with most of my team and we began to enjoy each other.

On October 4 I interviewed for a Training Instructor position. My team was horrified! Why do you want to leave us? I told them I didn't want to leave - I really had begun to really enjoy CSD. It was simply an interview and I might not get the job.

But I did. When Beth and John offered the postion to me, they were absolutely surprised when I asked for the weekend to think about it. I think they expected me to jump at the chance to leave CSD! Really, I had grown to love the department and my team. I didn't want to leave, but training offered me more daytime opportunity and, well, I love being an instructor. I had occasional doubts as to my effectiveness as a supervisor. I don't doubt my talent as an instructor. I know I'm good.

In the end I did accept the training position. Before I started my new job, I reviewed my team's stats:

Handling Time (% to goal)
Aug-86%
Sep-92%
Oct-101% (Yipee!!!!!)

After Work Time (% to goal)
Aug-37%
Sep-38%
Oct-42% (Hey, it’s still an improvement)

Compliance
Aug-92%
Sep-92.5%
Oct-93% (This is right at the goal.)

I’m most proud of their Handling time. It was the first time all year that they made goal (actually exceeded it!) and it’s the highest it’s been all year!

No more doubts, I’m a good supervisor. I did make a difference in CSD.

Unhappy Halloween

It's been a while since I've worked for a company that encourages dressing up for Halloween, my absolute favorite holiday of the year. Some of the characters I portrayed in the past: a mime, The Phantom of the Opera, a fortune teller, a farmer's daughter, Emmett Kelly, Zorro, Juliet, Roxie Hart, and a Mardi Gras Princess.

This year I had three potential costumes in mind - all Disney characters. Ultimately it boiled down to what I could find at Goodwill.

A brown skirt was the easiest find. I was terribly excited to find the same blue colored undershirt, then the search began for a black vest. Beige kitchen curtains could be altered to make the apron. I already had black ballet flats (purchased at Goodwill last year). And I also found silver shoes that would do for the glass slipper. I was going to be Cinderella!

I woke expecting to feel the rush of kid-like Christmas morning excitement! Instead I felt the rush of blood to my head, the throbbing of my sinuses, the swell of my throat. I downed some pills and returned to bed, optimistic a nap would make me feel better. I awoke in a drug induced haze, feeling worse. After Cade told me that I looked "real bad", I called in to work sick, and returned to bed. My Boo turned into boo hoo hoo. I guess I'll be Cinderella next year.

Zombie!

I warned her of the dangers of working Evil Dead: The Musical.
She obviously didn't listen...

We Will Rock You! The Music of Queen

Bridget is a big Queen fan. When she found out the Winston-Salem Symphony was performing Queen songs as part of their Plugged-In Pops series she asked if I wanted to go.

I'm not a big fan of the symphony. I rank the symphony right up there with opera. Both events are usually stuffy and overly long.

I used to go roller skating every Friday night and at least once, the rink DJ would play "Another One Bites The Dust." That's a good roller skating song. "Bohemian Rhapsody" is not. So, while I know who Queen was, I was not a huge fan.

Still, I knew if I didn't go with Bridget she wouldn't go at all. As much as I was not looking forward to it, I did agree.

Honestly, I had a much better time than I anticipated.

I thought it would just be the symphony playing Queen's music. I was pleasantly surprised to learn they brought in a guest artist, Michael Shotton, who was lead vocals. He actually sang along with the symphony!

I was also surprised to learn that I knew more Queen songs than I thought: "Under Pressure", "Somebody To Love", "We Are The Champions" were all song I recognized and sang along with. I never realized they were performed by Queen.

Utlimately Bridget and I had a really, really good time.

A Cute Reminder

Cade sometimes has trouble remembering in the mornings the things he needs to bring to school. I don't blame him, I'm not my best at 7 in the morning.

When I got home tonight, I saw this reminder to himself.

I love that little boy!

An Afternoon At The Theatre, "The Addams Family"

Ken and Heather were supposed to see this on Broadway. Due to the reviews, they gave their tickets to Sam and saw another show. Sam did see it, and he thought it was okay.

Unfortunately both Chad and I felt like it was 2.5 hours of our lives that we'll never get back. I thought it was absolutely horrible. The score was awful and the book was weak. The dance numbers had me laughing they were so bad. And "The Moon and Me" Uncle Fester number...I think I feel asleep.

Ken and Heather had the right idea. I wish Chad and I had painted a wall so we could have watched it dry.
