Subject: Dropping Band for 2013-2014 Year

Good afternoon. My son, Cade, is a rising 6th grader. He initially signed up for Band due to a very intense desire to play the drums. Between you and me, I believe it was more his dream to become a rock star that drove this selection. Long story short, he cannot read music and therefore can’t play drums next year.

I did speak with Mr. Liner (or was it Mr. Talbot? I could swear he said his name was Talbot, but I don’t see a Talbot on the website.) who encouraged me to talk with Cade about possibly trying another instrument. I did as suggested and, well, there aren’t many clarinet playing rock stars. As I figured, Cade is no longer interested in Band.

He is, however, now interested in Chorus. (If he can’t be a rock star playing the drums, he can achieve the same status by being lead singer, right?!) This is the choice I initially encouraged him to make when filling out his class forms. I feel it would be a better fit for him than Band.

So, to get to the point of my email, how do we go about dropping Band and picking up Chorus?

Forsyth County students set Zumbatomic world record
UPDATED 3:45 PM EST Feb 26, 2013

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A group of exercising Winston-Salem/Forsyth County school students now owns a Guinness World Record.

More than 1,100 fourth- and fifth-grade students set a record Feb. 1 as the largest Zumbatomic class in a single venue. Zumbatomic is a version of Zumba meant for children under 15.

The students completed a 30-minute class featuring two certified instructors and dozens of helpers. Winston-Salem Mayor Allen Joines also participated in the class.

The record was part of a month-long challenge to get students at 19 schools to move at least 30 minutes a day, five days a week, as well as perform one nutritional practice each day this month.

The previous record was a class of 383 children in a Texas class last year.

Forsyth County students attempt to dance into record book with Zumba
Posted: Friday, February 1, 2013 7:53 pm | Updated: 12:39 am, Sat Feb 2, 2013.
Arika Herron/Winston-Salem Journal
Nearly 1,200 area students attempted Friday to shake, shimmy and shuffle their way into the Guinness Book of World Records.

Fourth- and fifth-grade students from six Winston-Salem/Forsyth County elementary schools took part in what was billed as the world’s largest Zumbatomic class – an aerobic program for children under the age of 15 – at the Benton Convention Center Friday morning to kick off the Go Red and Get moving initiative.

Go Red and Get Moving is designed to get children active and healthy and raise awareness of heart disease during the month of February.

Event coordinator Cheryl Lindsay said the event had three goals: break the world record for largest Zumbatomic class, start the Go Red and Get Moving campaign and teach kids about making healthy choices. It’s a lesson Lindsay said she hopes the students will adopt now and continue a lifetime.

“It’s something that contagious,” Lindsay said. “So it’s important to get people started early.”

Mayor Allen Joines joined the 1,121 students and their teachers for the 30-minute dance workout. As dance music blared, students followed choreographed routines performed by instructors on stage.

“It was really fun,” said Cecilia Beck, 9, a fourth-grader at Kernersville Elementary. “I’ve never done this before, so it was a new experience for me. I loved it.”

She wasn’t alone. At the end of the 30-minute session, students showed their enthusiasm with hugs, cheers and high fives. Many kept dancing to the music and rushed to the center of the floor for the finale balloon drop.
“Keep moving,” encouraged Forsyth County District Judge Denise Hartsfield.

Keeping the kids moving for the rest of the month will be the focus now. The six schools that participated Friday - Cash, Diggs-Latham, Kernersville, Lewisville, Sherwood Forest and Meadowlark elementary schools – are just a few of the 20 schools that will participate in the Go Red and Get Moving campaign for the next month.

Students who participate commit to exercise 30 minutes a day, five days a week and adopt one new healthy habit for the month of February. Students have been encouraged to set goals such as drinking more water, getting more sleep and eating more fruits and vegetables.

“I’m going to play and exercise and eat healthy food,” said Jaemarius Harper, 9, a fourth-grader at Kernersville Elementary.

Lexi Lovelace, 9, a fourth-grader at Lewisville Elementary, had a different idea.

“I’m going to drink tons of water,” she said, raising a half-empty water bottle.

Those are all good ideas that school administrators hope last longer than just the next 28 days.

Go Red and Get Moving is a way to keep health top of mind for students even after the challenge is over. Nancy Sutton, health and physical education specialist for the school system, said lifestyles today make it harder for students to be healthy. It’s never been more important to instill the importance of making healthy choices, she said.

“We’ve got a lot of things to fight,” Sutton said. “The younger you’re practicing healthy habits, the more likely those will carry into adulthood.”

The official designation of the world record attempted Friday should be announced in the next few weeks. The previous record for the largest Zumbatomic class was 383 participants, set in April 2012.

5th Grade, 2nd Q Report Card

Once again I'm proud of Cade. He maintained his A in Math from last quarter and his B in Science. He did go down in Reading and Social Studies - from an A to a B. He got 3 B's and 1 A. Still very, very good.

I did ask Cade what he thought of his grades in Reading and Social Studies. He likes to read so he said he just needed to keep reading more to work on comprehensive. He said he does not like Social Studies, but he recognized he needs to study more.

Because of his great report card his afternoon Playstation 3 activities are fine. He really is regimented to do his homework first before playing. I just sometimes worry he rushes through the homework to get to the PS3.

But with grades like this, I can let him have his fun.

5th Grade Report Card

I am so very proud of Cade.

Report cards came today and I am absolutely thrilled. Cade got 3 A's and 2 B's! I've never been one of those parents who pays out money. It's a good things since he would have cleaned me out!

Reading - A
Math - A (Now this is huge. It was such a struggle for him with multiplications. Somehow things have just clicked recently for him with Math. So, so proud of this accomplishment.)
Social Studies - A
Language Arts - B
Science - B

An Email From Cade's Teacher

Sent: Fri, Oct 26, 2012 12:45 pm
Subject: good news
Just wanted to share something good...

There is a boy in the class that is probably not Cade's first choice of friend. This boy has had a difficult time making friends. However, he thinks the world of Cade. Today, I saw Cade spend some recess time playing ball with him. Then, when making our presidential posters, the boy asked Cade if he could join their group. Although they were almost finished, Cade made him feel like he was definitely part of the group!

I did pull Cade aside and let him know that I appreciated how he responded to the other boy. I also told him that just these few minutes have meant so much to this other student.

It is moments like this that just warm my heart!

Susan

I cried reading this email, and then immediately printed it and put it up on the fridge. We've talked to Cade at great length about being a friend instead of a bully. Perhaps he's finally learning.

Station 13

One of my favorite things to do is to volunteer to help with Cade's Field Day. After having to skip it last year, I was very excited to be helping this year.

Allan and I usually work the Spray Tag station. This year he didn't want to get wet, so we asked for the Parachute Popcorn station. I figured this one would be pretty easy since the kids already know what to do.

For the most part we had a blast. There were two classes that didn't want to listen, but seeing the kids having a great time made it worthwhile. I'd call out and ask them to bring the parachute up over their heads and then slam it down so the balls would shoot high into the sky. The kids loved doing that and would scream when the balls came falling back into the parachute.

We had a great time, though my voice is a bit hoarse from projecting too much!

4th Grade Report Card

Cade received his first real report card. Here's how he did:

In Music, Art, PE, Behavior and Work Habits he earned an "S." There's no key on the actual report card, so I'm assuming an "S" means satisfactory and not sucks.

In his core classes, Reading, Language Arts, Math and Science he earned a "B." I'm especially proud of Cade's Math grade. We all worked hard for that B!

He did make a "C" in Social Studies, which surprised me.

Cade was very proud of his accomplishments, and we were too. We took him to dinner to celebrate.

Date Night

Phoenix was beautiful and I had a great time, but I really did miss my little man. When Allan asked him why I was coming home last night instead of today, Cade smugly replied, "Because Mommy missed me."

When Cade got home from school I asked him if he wanted to go on a date tonight and we decided to attend his school's Carnival. $5.00 got him 20 tickets to exchange for various fair activities. He met up with one of his BFFs, Colton, and I soon became a third wheel. No matter, I was content to watch him race around and have fun.

Here's one of the "booths" Cade was most excited about. The car came compliments of the Winston Cup Museum.

Report Card

Second quarter report cards came out today.

C in Reading
A in Writing
A in Science
C in Social Studies
B in Mathematics

He went down in Reading and Social Studies, and we weren't surprised. Cade has promised to work on his reading comprehension and we've committed to helping him study more. (It floors me that no one teaches you how to study, only telling you that you should.)

The best news is that Cade did improve in Writing, Science and Mathematics. We've really worked hard with Cade on his math. He still has a habit of counting on his fingers and we are trying to help him memorize simply addition/subtraction facts. He's getting so much better with memorization of his multiplication facts.

Toy Soldiers

The entire 3rd grade class will be presenting Santa's Holiday Playlist tomorrow night after a PTA meeting. Cade's class are toy soldiers and will be singing and dancing to "Just A Little R & R". I can't wait to see the show!

Report Card

Cade brought home his first real report card today:

B in Reading
B in Writing
B in Science
A in Social Studies
C in Mathematics

I'm so proud of Cade! Too, Mallorie deserves a little of the credit. Not only does she pick him up at the busstop, but she helps Cade with his homework every day. She takes this job very seriously. I'm so proud of both their accomplishments.

Art by Me

Well, the art is actually by Cade and is part of a school fundraiser. Everyone draws a picture and the fund raising company will turn it into a magnet, mouse pad, trivet, etc. I've got all of Mallorie's magnets and all of Cade's, except for this year.

Usually the fundraiser package comes home with a "sample" magnet. As happens every year, we forget to return the magnet and end up having to pay the $5.00. This year the company didn't include a sample magnet. Nothing to return and I'm still $5.00 to the good.

Oh, Cade says it's a picture of a bird. A tropical bird, to be exact.

Friday, October 08, 2010

Cade has a "Bones" test today. Let's hope this skeleton he put together (under Mallorie's supervision) will help him pass.
