Skyview Orientation Guide
American Airlines has a brand new headquarters in Dallas, Texas. It's called Skyview and I hear it is very pretty. (I haven't been there yet, but am looking forward to going!)

Profound Quote
I'm in Dallas today to attend our Vice President's annual meeting. Some of the speakers had some very flat presentations. (Thank goodness the room was a bit on the chilly side. If I'd been warmer I might have fallen asleep!) A couple of the presentations were very dynamic. I particularly enjoyed the internal marketing of American's "WHY?" (And I have to admit, I did get a bit teary eyed during the presentation. I so love working for American Airlines!)
One of my favorite speakers from last year was back again. Thomas Rajan is the Managing Director for Talent Strategy and People Development. His presentations are always smart, interesting, creative and just phenomenal. I would love to sit down with him and just talk.
This year he included this quote from Alvin Toffler that just resonated with me.

Apple, Amazon, Facebook and more than 50 other companies sign letter against Trump administration's proposed gender definition changes

Apple, Amazon, Facebook and Google are among the companies spanning tech, consumer products and financial services that signed a statement supporting the protections.
The move is a response to an Oct. 21 New York Times report that the Trump administration is considering limiting the definition of gender to birth genitalia.
"Sex means a person's status as male or female based on immutable biological traits identifiable by or before birth," the Department of Health and Human Services proposed in a memo obtained by the Times.
If legislation were to move forward, it would jeopardize legal protections for an estimated 1.4 million Americans who identify as a gender other than the one they were assigned at birth, the Times said.
The statement from the companies, which have nearly 4.8 million employees, said "diversity and inclusion are good for business."
"Transgender people are our beloved family members and friends, and our valued team members," the statement said. "What harms transgender people harms our companies."
Out Leadership and the Human Rights Campaign mobilized the 15 LGBTQ community organizations that sought signatures for the statement.
This is the full statement along with the list of signatories:
- Companies spanning tech, financial services and consumer products are standing up for legal protections for transgender people.
- The companies represent over $2.4 trillion in annual revenue and have almost 4.8 million employees.
- The signed statement comes after a New York Times report that the Trump administration is considering limiting the definition of gender to birth anatomy.

We, the undersigned businesses, stand with the millions of people in America who identify as transgender, gender non-binary, or intersex, and call for all such people to be treated with the respect and dignity everyone deserves.
We oppose any administrative and legislative efforts to erase transgender protections through reinterpretation of existing laws and regulations. We also fundamentally oppose any policy or regulation that violates the privacy rights of those that identify as transgender, gender non-binary, or intersex.
In the last two decades, dozens of federal courts have affirmed the rights and identities of transgender people. Cognizant of growing medical and scientific consensus, courts have recognized that policies that force people into a binary gender definition determined by birth anatomy fail to reflect the complex realities of gender identity and human biology.
Recognizing that diversity and inclusion are good for business, and that discrimination imposes enormous productivity costs (and exerts undue burdens), hundreds of companies, including the undersigned, have continued to expand inclusion for transgender people across corporate America. Currently more than 80 percent of the Fortune 500 have clear gender identity protections; two-thirds have transgender-inclusive healthcare coverage; hundreds have LGBTQ+ and Allies business resource groups and internal training efforts.
Transgender people are our beloved family members and friends, and our valued team members. What harms transgender people harms our companies.
We call for respect and transparency in policy-making, and for equality under the law for transgender people.

Do Crew: Kettle Counting
Dear Volunteer,
I just wanted to take the time to thank you for all you did this Christmas season. The Salvation Army could have not assisted as many families - 2,295, children -- 5,425 and seniors -- 835, that we did this year without your help. Volunteers empower our organizations so that we may have the ability to serve our community; without your generosity of time and money this is not possible.
Whether you volunteered as a bell ringer, angel tree assistant, toy warehouse sorter or counted kettle money, your time means a family in our community was able to receive the assistance they needed this season.
One thing I can let you know is that The Salvation Army does have the best volunteers. When we put out the call for help, you are there! I cannot express my gratitude enough for what you did this Christmas season but I can tell you that it is with great pride that you have made a difference in someone’s life.
I pray that you are blessed many times over this year; I do hope that you will return once again and let others know what you did this season bringing more volunteers just like you to assist us once again.
Thank you and many blessings

American Airlines Is The Best Place To Work
American has been honored once again by the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) with the highest possible rating in the prestigious 2018 Corporate Equality Index (CEI). American was the only airline to achieve a perfect score when the CEI launched in 2002, and continues to be one of only a handful of corporations to do so every year since.
The CEI is a nationally recognized benchmark that evaluates America’s top workplaces and their inclusion of LGBTQ employees and their allies. Companies like American that earn the top CEI score of 100 percent also are named the “Best Places to Work” in the U.S.
“For more than two decades, American has been a pioneer in establishing fair-minded policies and practices for our LGBTQ team members and customers,” said Patrick O'Keeffe, senior vice president, People and a co-executive sponsor of the Pride Employee Business Resource Group (EBRG). “Fostering an inclusive work environment that embraces the diversity of our team members and the customers we serve is one of the keys to American’s success, and we are honored to receive this continued recognition from the HRC.”
American has a long history of commitment to the LGBTQ community in the course of doing business. In the last year, American has provided significant support to several LGBTQ organizations including: Astraea Lesbian Foundation in Dallas/Fort Worth, Los Angeles LGBT Center, Ali Forney Center in New York City, Center on Halsted in Chicago and GLBT Community Center of Central Florida.
For decades, American’s Pride EBRG, which was the airline’s first EBRG, has championed LGBTQ travelers as well as diversity, equality and respect throughout the travel industry. American is a proud member and supporter of the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, PFLAG and Lambda Legal.
The Human Rights Campaign is dedicated to promoting and ensuring public understanding of LGBTQ issues through innovative education and communication strategies. A complete list of CEI rankings is available at hrc.org.

A Message From Doug Parker - Profit Sharing
Dear Team Members,
Today marks the first profit sharing payout of our combined airline, and only the second profit sharing payment at American Airlines in the last 15 years! These payments are the result of a program we put in place in March 2016 without any contract negotiations or trade-offs. We did it because it was the right thing to do for our phenomenal team members.
It is a great time to be at American and we have a wonderful future ahead. We have the youngest fleet of our U.S. peers, and are taking delivery of another 57 new mainline aircraft this year. We are investing billions of dollars in technology and facilities that will improve the experiences of our customers and team members for years to come. Premium Economy is rolling out now, offering international customers a new choice between Main Cabin and Business Class. We are adding high-speed, satellite-based Wi-Fi that will bring the living room video experience to our aircraft. And thanks to all of you, we are running a great airline, having just completed one of the best operating reliability months in the history of American.
The most important work we have underway is validating the trust each of you place in American and our leadership team: a trust that you have leaders who care about you; a trust that you are respected and appreciated; and a trust that you can go home from work fulfilled, knowing that you made a difference in people’s lives. We know that work is just beginning and will take time. We are committed to making it happen and to working together to build a lasting company for the future.
One way we can validate the trust of our team members is through regular and consistent profit sharing. While we cannot undo that many are receiving only their second profit sharing check in 15 years, we will continually work to earn your trust for the future. And for the thousands who began their careers at American in recent years, we need to validate that you have joined a new, transformed American. Let’s set a goal that all team members, no matter when you started, never again know a year without a profit sharing check. We’re off to a good start, thanks to you.
Congratulations on this well-deserved achievement! It is an honor to work with and for you.

A Message from Doug Parker – Celebrating a Phenomenal 2016
Dear Team Members,
Today Air Transport World (ATW) – the leading magazine for global airlines and the air transport community – announced its selection of American Airlines as its 2017 Airline of the Year. American has won this prestigious award twice before, most recently almost 30 years ago in 1988. Congratulations!
This recognition is a testament to the mission shared by 120,000 team members of our mainline and wholly owned regional airlines. The ATW editorial board described the American integration as “practically flawless, despite it being the largest, most complex airline merger in history.” And while it is satisfying to receive accolades for our integration work, it is even more energizing to receive recognition for the work being done for our future. ATW cited our operational and customer service improvements, as well as the more than $3 billion in new customer products and services, including greater onboard connectivity, new entertainment and dining choices, upgraded lounges and new destinations. Lastly, they note that all of this is being accomplished while delivering profitable returns to our shareholders.
American is setting a new standard for service, and that's thanks to the work all of you do. It is a noble calling to play a role in transporting the people who entrust their travel needs to us, and it is gratifying to be recognized when we do that well.
To celebrate this prestigious recognition by ATW and your unique part in it, American employees – including team members at Envoy, Piedmont and PSA – will receive two positive space, round-trip Main Cabin tickets anywhere we fly. These tickets will be available for use beginning this summer through December 2018.
American Airlines was selected as Airline of the Year for 2017 because of all of you and the jobs you do so well for our customers. I hope you enjoy a special trip, and the memories you’ll create with someone close to you, as appreciation for all you’ve done to set American on its path to greatness. Congratulations and here’s to another great year.

Hope Ahead
The 22nd annual American Airlines Celebrity Golf and Tennis Tournament took place last weekend in Carlsbad, California, raising more than $250,000 for the Susan G. Komen Young Investigators Grant Program, which funds research for metastatic breast cancer, an incurable form of the disease.
American honored 16 employee survivors and co-survivors at the event.
“It was such a memorable and beautiful weekend. I was so honored to participate and share my story,” said DFW-based flight attendant Lenard Blackwell.

‘Sully’ Flies High With $35.5 Million Opening
Sully made a much a bigger splash at the box office than was initially expected, touching down at an estimated $35.5 million for the No. 1 spot in its opening weekend.
Playing on 3,525 screens, the Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow drama made $12.2 million on Friday, boosting three-day estimates that were previously set at $24 million for the weekend. The Clint Eastwood-directed film stars Tom Hanks as hero pilot Chelsey "Sully" Sullenberger.
With an 84 percent Rotten Tomatoes score, reviews are solid for the movie about Sully's crucial call to glide an imperiled US Airways jet for a water landing on the Hudson River just minutes after it took off from Laguardia Airport, a decision that saved 155 lives on board in 2009.
CinemaScore polling said opening night moviegoers gave it an A grade on average.

American Airlines Celebrity Golf and Tennis Tournament
No, I don't golf. (After all, you know what "golf" stands for right? Gentlemen Only Ladies Forbidden. Get it?) I don't even particularily like Putt-Putt.
Now, I have swung a tennis racket. I think it was the summer of my senior year when I was thinking aboutauditioning trying out for the NDSH tennis team because I wanted a letter. Let's just say that I realized my talent was in the performing arts and not tennis.
Despite the above, I've accepted an invitation to be the "plus one" for a guest of honor for this benefit tournament.
American Airlines goes pink during the month of October for Breast Cancer Awareness month. This annual celebrity tournament raises funds for the Susan G. Komen foundation. The guests of honor are American Airlines employees who are breast cancer survivers. Crystal has survived breast cancer 3 times (!) and she shared her story with the company last year. She was chosen to attend the beneift and asked me to accompany her.
This is just a little snapshot of the event. You can read more about it here.

I Love My Employer!
American joins amicus brief related to N.C. House Bill 2
American has signed onto an amicus curiae (“friend of the court”) brief in support of the U.S. Department of Justice’s motion seeking to block the enforcement of North Carolina’s House Bill 2. HB2 mandates that, in all state and local government owned buildings, including public schools, airports, and agencies in North Carolina, individuals must use the restroom corresponding with the gender on their birth certificate rather than their gender identity. Laws that allow this type of discrimination go against American’s core beliefs of equality and inclusion – values that are crucial for the success of our company. So we have joined with more than 60 other leading corporations to express why HB2 is bad for business and will negatively impact our ability to recruit and retain employees in the state of North Carolina. Visit the Human Rights Campaign for more information and to read the full amicus brief.
